North Korea's Elections: A Different Perspective
Rare Mention of Dissenting Votes
During the recent elections in North Korea, there was a surprising mention of dissenting votes. Analysts, however, were skeptical and dismissed it as a mere formality.
Supreme People's Assembly Elections
Elections for the Supreme People's Assembly (SPA), the country's national legislature, are held every four to five years. The SPA is responsible for passing laws and electing the country's president.
Other Elections
In addition to the SPA elections, local elections have been held in North Korea since 1999. These elections are used to select local officials and representatives.
Elections as a Pretext
Analysts believe that the North Korean regime has historically used elections as a pretext to restrict internal movement and track the whereabouts of citizens.
Delayed or Cancelled Elections
Parliamentary elections were expected to be held in North Korea in March or April 2024. However, it is now believed that they have been delayed or even cancelled.
