Dan Hurley Turns Down Lakers Offer, to Stay at UConn for Third Straight NCAA Title
Los Angeles Lakers Targeted UConn's Coach as Franchise's Next Leader
Hurley Led UConn to Back-to-Back NCAA National Championships
On the heels of leading UConn to back-to-back NCAA national championships, Dan Hurley has turned down an offer from the Los Angeles Lakers to stay at UConn and seek a third straight title.
Hurley met with Lakers VP Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss in Southern California last Friday, but ultimately decided to remain with the Huskies.
The Lakers were targeting Hurley as the franchise's next coach after parting ways with Frank Vogel earlier this year.
Hurley has been a rising star in the coaching ranks, leading UConn to unprecedented success in recent years. In addition to his two national championships, he has also guided the Huskies to three consecutive Big East regular season titles and two Big East Tournament championships.
Hurley's decision to stay at UConn is a major blow to the Lakers, who are in desperate need of a new coach. The Lakers have not won a championship since 2010 and have struggled to find consistency in recent years.
With Hurley now off the table, the Lakers will likely turn their attention to other candidates, such as former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts and Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson.
