Japan Earthquake Leaves Dozens Dead, Tsunami Warnings Lifted

Hundreds of Homes Collapsed, Rescue Efforts Ongoing

A powerful earthquake struck the Noto peninsula in western Japan on Monday at approximately 4:10 pm local time, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuation orders. The quake's magnitude was measured as 7.6 on the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) scale and 7.5 on the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scale.

As of Tuesday morning, the death toll from the earthquake stands at over a hundred, with hundreds more injured. Numerous homes and buildings have collapsed, trapping residents beneath the rubble. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with emergency responders working tirelessly to locate and extricate survivors.

Tsunami warnings were issued for several coastal areas following the earthquake, but have since been lifted as the risk of a major tsunami has subsided. However, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to stay away from low-lying areas.

The quake was centered in the Noto peninsula, located on the western coast of Japan's Honshu island. It was preceded by several smaller temblors in the region over the past few days, raising concerns about possible seismic activity in the area.

The earthquake has caused widespread damage to infrastructure and buildings, including roads, bridges, and power lines. Transportation has been disrupted, with rail and air travel suspended in affected areas. Utility companies are working to restore electricity and other essential services.
